There was an old man who lived a long and worthy life. When he died, an angel came to him and said, “Come, I will show you Hell.” He was taken to a room where a group of people at around a huge banquet table filled with a scrumptious feast.
The old man noticed something peculiar about the people; they had no elbows. When the people tried to feed themselves, they could not bring the food to their mouths, but would drop it to the floor where the dogs would quickly devour it. Seeing the people famished and desperate, was too much for the man to endure. “Please take me away from this place!” he said to the angel.
“Very well,” said the angel. “But I must take you to one more place. I will now show you heaven.” They came to another room, and to the man’s surprise, it was identical to the first room. A group of people sat around the same huge banquet table filled with delightful food. Like the people in Hell, these people had no elbows. “I don’t understand,” said the old man. “This is the same place. These people will suffer the same fate as the others,” and he turned his head away, for he could not bear to watch the suffering again.
“Watch,” the angel said, placing her hand on his shoulder. As the old man looked back at the people, he was pleasantly surprised to see each person feeding the other. They had learned to help one another, and they were all well fed.
